Sheep Feeder Plans

This step by step woodworking project is about sheep feeder plans. I have designed this roofed sheep feeder so you can get the job done quickly using common materials and tools. You can adjust the size and the design of this sheep feeder, to suit your needs. My plans come with step by step instructions and you can easily adjust all the dimensions to suit your needs. See my other DIY projects HERE.

We recommend you to invest in the best materials you could afford. Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. See all my Premium Plans in the Shop.

How to build a sheep feeder

Building the base of the tray

Building the base of the tray

The first step of the project is to build the floor for the sheep feeder. Cut the components at the right dimensions and then lay them on a level surface. Leave no gaps between the 96″ long and then align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the slats. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Building the tray frame

Next, you need to frame the tray for the feeder. Cut the components from 1×6 lumber and align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws lock the component together tightly. Make sure the corners are square for a neat result. Drill pocket holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock the tray to the base, after aligning the edges flush.

Fitting the posts

Next, you need to attach the legs to the tray. Cut the legs from 2×4 lumber at 72″ and 70″. Plumb the legs with a spirit level and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the tray floor.

Continue the project by attaching the 2×4 rafters to the top of the legs. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws, so you can lock them into place tightly. Fit the rest of the rafters.

Fitting the roofing

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof of the sheep feeder with tar paper and staple it into place tightly. Next, you need to install the asphalt shingles using the manufacturer’s instructions. Install drip edges, as well. alternatively, you could attach 1×2 battens over the rafters and attach metal sheets.

Last, but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and make sure all the joints are strong and durable. Apply appropriate products over the components so you can protect them from decay.
