 | Planing Short Boards The problem is running a board that is less than 12 inches long through a planer is definitely not recommended. To prevent this, I glue long, narrow scrap pieces to both edges of the short board, see drawing at this link.

 | Planer Sled With the cost of lumber, I’m not crazy about throwing out short scrap pieces of wood. But planing short pieces (less than 12? long) is not recommended by most manufacturers. That’s because the pieces can get caught between the feed rollers and chewed up by the blades.

 | Planer Sled (PDF) Planing a straight, flat face on bowed or twisted stock can be a challenge. The problem is that the board often comes out of the planer with the same warp or twist it had when it went in. The solution I came up with is a planer sled that carries the workpiece through the planer and guarantees great results.
