Jig, Faceplate Cutoff Fixture
I turn almost all of my turnings glued to a faceplate. I usually part the turnings off the faceplate but I wanted to share a fixture that my friend Sonnie Sharrar uses to cut the faceplates off his bowls. The fixture in the photos is a bit different than Sonnie, but I tend to turn larger bowls and this fixture can handle them.

Salt and Pepper Shakers
Start by deciding on your design. Ours is very contemporary with a simple rounded top and three small beads at the bottom. You may prefer something a bit more elaborate. Turn one or a few sets at a time out of full 2 inches x 2 inches or glued-up stock, as you prefer. Remember to leave glued-up stock clamped together for at least 24 hours before turning.

Turned Branch Bird House
By Bill Kaufman - As a new turner I needed a project that I could use to practice technique. This brief article describes the basic steps to create an ornamental bird house from a tree branch. Turn a few of these for the gardeners in your area. It sure beats throwing the branches in the landfill.

From fire wood to turning wood.
One of the first difficulties encountered by a new turner is where to get the wood to turn. Most grab a 2x4, cut it to a 2x2 and turn it round. This gets tired fast. Firewood is available in most communities. It is fairly cheap, hardwood instead of softwood, certainly a lot cheaper than finished, kiln dried boards, and in more suitable shapes for turners. That said the question is what to do with it to prepare it for turning.
