Spindles, Make your own chair
I was recently repairing a chair of the type with the arching back and a series of spokes or spindles going from the seat to the arch. The chair was missing one of the spindles, so had to make a new one. I did not think turning such a long and thin spindle on a lathe would be a good idea, and carving one out with a spokeshave would have taken too long to get it right. So I thought up a neat method of doing it on a jointer.

Goblet, Turning A - revisited
In 1991 I wrote an article for Practical Woodworking about turning natural edge goblets. Since that time I have progressed and whereas I used to look for limbwood which was nearly circular I now look for material with a much more irregular natural edge.

Plate and Bowls - Wooden Place Setting
Courtesy of Hands On, Nov/Dec 1980 - For most of us, it was our first woodworking project - turning a bowl on a lathe. But afterwards we went on to bigger and better things, and forgot about that simple bowl that once had us basking in the glory of our own accomplishment.

Goblets with a Natural Edge, Turning
Goblets made with a natural edge forming the lip of the bowl present an interesting challenge to the turner and the opportunity to experiment. Because these goblets involve thin turning it may be thought that they are not for the inexperienced or the faint-hearted; but do not worry, experimentation costs nothing but time. The wood can be picked up, free, out of the hedgerow or somebodys firewood pile. Dry wood is not required; unseasoned wood is easier to turn and, sometimes, as it dries it distorts into interesting and attractive shapes.
