Bowl, Pedestal
If you love wooden bowls, you will enjoy the accomplishment of designing and turning your own bowls on a wood lathe. It is relatively quick and easy to do once you get the hang of using the lathe and the specific tools required. This decorative wood pedestal bowl can be used for many purposes, such as a salad bowl, storing fruit, shells, etc. The dark, rich walnut wood pedestal and overall design will compliment other furniture and decorations wherever it is displayed in the home.

Pen Assembly Press, Building A
There are many ways to assemble a turned pen. I wanted a way to assemble my pens which was easy and portable. You can buy assembly presses in the stores and catalogs but I wanted to make my own using my years of experience. This is my second generation effort. Building the first generation prototype allowed me to work out all the bugs and to arrive at such a strong final unit.

Bottle Stopper, Turned
When I first came across the Premium All-Chrome Berea stopper base, my first reaction was not so good. And that is the reason for this hybrid turning instruction...to effectively hide the humps and make a more pleasing transition.

Box, Simple - turned on a lathe
Turning boxes can be a source of considerable satisfaction not least because they require a certain degree of skill. There is the challenge of creating a satisfactory design, making a well fitting lid, and finishing the box to the level required for an object which is likely to be treasured by its owner for many years. Small boxes can be used for keeping many things: stamps, pills, paper clips, buttons, as well as rings, and other small pieces of jewelry, in short any of those small items which we all seem to accumulate.

Jig, Parallax (PDF)
After rejecting a couple of ideas about how to project a pattern onto the work while turning, I came up with this idea - make a jig to hold two copies if the plans, one cut along the finished contours and the other uncut, so that you can use the parallax effect to line up your eye correctly with the plans.

Grandpas Tractor Woodworking Plan
Yes indeed! As close to his tractor as we can get, or at least what we can remember! As a 3 or 4 year old, I was told if a person sounded like the old tractor, well, they already had one foot in the ground. Coughing, sputtering, and lumbering along the road. Every day seemed like its last but it kept going anyway. It was scary for a kid to see it defy death every day! I intended my design to rock on big rocking platform but the project never got that far. The grandchildren liked it just as it was, with its turing steering wheel, moving the gear lever, all while pretending that they too we in control of the beast. Grandpas Tractor features a wood-fashioned muffler, engine block, hand crank, shifting levers, hitch bar in back, a free-turning steering wheel (does not control front wheels), with front wheels which turn and are secured by - tie rods. It is a sturdy, interesting, and one of a kind project that can truly be built by any skill level. Includes full size patterns for all curved pieces, materials list, photos, and instructions. View the Larger Image Slideshow for pictures of the actual plan.

Bottle in a Cube
After experimenting, I discovered that cherry was the best material to use for this bottle in a cube project, created from a solid piece of wood on the lathe.

Table Legs, Turning
FIRST, turn a prototype leg. Place your prototype leg directly behind the blank for each final leg. By sighting along the upper horizons of both pieces, you will simplify the process of repeating specific shapes.

Tool Caddy, Lazy Susan Bench top
I needed a way to keep small hand tools organized, so I built the caddy shown in the photo. And to make it even more useful, it’s mounted to a lazy Susan. The lazy Susan is sandwiched between a hardwood base and a piece of inch hardboard... inches

Bowl, Face Grain - with natural edge
Not surprisingly, a natural edged bowl starts with a log. Here is a fairly dry piece of cherry, complete with a radial split along which I plan to cut, leaving me with two half logs to choose from for bowls.

Bowl turning on the Shopsmith Lathe
By Dick Gerard - As I tell my students, there are no right or wrong ways to turn. If you are happy with a particular tool making a particular cut or scrape, and if you are pleased with the end results, then that is the right inches way to do it.

Toy, Babys Rattle - turned on a lathe
This babys rattle is based on the woodturners old trick of turning a loose ring on a stem or spindle - in this case there are three rings and it is these which provide the sound effects. This rattle is an interesting exercise in woodturning which makes an attractive object. I should explain that it is not my design; in fact I think rattles of this type may have been around for generations. I have found, too, that versions of it exist all round the world.
