Table Saw Sled
A table saw sled makes cross cuts fast, safe and very accurate. They are useful for trimming sheet goods, mitering small pieces, making repetitive cuts and more.

Zero-Clearance Insert (video)
The opening in a zero-clearance insert is just a single saw kerf. And this gives you two main benefits. First, it prevents tearout along the cut line because the cut is supported on both sides. Second, it provides an added measure of safety when ripping thin pieces.

Using Push Sticks
A push stick is a shaped length of wood or other material that helps control the movement of a workpiece. It is most needed at the tablesaw, jointer, router table, and bandsaw.

Zero-Clearance Jig Ensures Safe, Smooth Cuts
Recently, I was building a project that required cutting inch wide grooves centered on the edge of some thick frame pieces. I mounted an inch dado blade in the table saw, and installed a dado blade insert. The only problem was the opening around the blade seemed huge. So big, in fact, I was concerned that the workpiece might actually tip down into the opening. That led me to build an L-shaped accessory that attaches to the rip fence on the table saw.

Router small pieces safely on the table
My table-mounted router seemed ideal for shaping 3/4 inch stock into knobs for a box I was building, but the small blanks--only 1 1/2 inch square--would make the job hazardous to my hands. So I built the jig, shown here, to hold onto the blanks.

Tool Stand, Palm Router (PDF)
A palm router packs a big punch into a compact size. This makes it easy to use and gives you more control and great visibility. But sometimes it is easier, and safer, to bring the workpiece to the router. So I gave my palm router an upgrade and built this multitool. The cutting diagrams and materials list are available to download in this Online Extra.

Resawing on the tablesaw
Resawing is cutting thin pieces of wood from a thick piece of stock. (In effect, ripping on edge.) A quick way to do this is on the table saw. Before you get started though, there are two safety precautions that are a must. First, to reduce the chance of kickback, use a zeroclearance insert with a splitter (see Photo at this site). Second, be sure to use a push block when making a cut.

Ripping Jig - Ride the fence rail
While using a pushstick to rip some thin strips, I realized that there must be a better, safer way to get the work done. This fence-riding pusher provides downward pressure on the workpiece and keeps your hand well clear of the blade.

Flag Preservation Frame
When Doug came upon an 45-star antique version of Old Glory that was in use the year his house was built, he just had to have it to display in his home. The couple was unsure how to safely protect and display the fragile piece of fabric, so they asked Ron to help.

Jig, Small Piece Miter Gauge
I make a lot of small picture frames for gifts. But there is a couple of challenges: mitering the small pieces accurately and holding them safely. So I have made a jig designed to help with this. It is nothing more than a shallow box attached to a miter gauge runner.

Jig, Mortising Router Table
You can make mortises with a fixed-base router mounted in a router table. To make a mortise this way, you have to lower a workpiece onto a spinning bit. It takes a little bit of setup to do this safely and correctly.

Featherboard, A New Kind of
I have always had problems with traditional finger-type featherboards. It is a real nuisance to discover that when the featherboard is applying enough pressure to hold the workpiece securely, it is hard to push the wood through the blade. I finally came up with a couple of alternatives that hold the stock tightly, yet do not resist forward movement. A further very big advantage of these jigs is that they permit safe climb cutting on the router table for unusual situations or for wood that has a tendency to splinter.
