Spindles, Make your own chair
I was recently repairing a chair of the type with the arching back and a series of spokes or spindles going from the seat to the arch. The chair was missing one of the spindles, so had to make a new one. I did not think turning such a long and thin spindle on a lathe would be a good idea, and carving one out with a spokeshave would have taken too long to get it right. So I thought up a neat method of doing it on a jointer.

Chairmakers Devils, Making
I had recently taken some old spokeshave blades and built new bodies for them. I had also made a spokeshave using the kit from Lee Valley. It seemed to me that the skills I learned doing that would easily transfer to making chair devils. In practice I found this to be true, in fact, in my opinion, making the chair devils was as easy as making a spokeshave.

Although a few craftsmen are making fine medieval and Renaissance furniture, most of us still sit on director’s chairs at events. This article is aimed at making some medieval seating more accessible.

Chair, Plywood
I need a chair for my workshop. I could buy one, but I would rather make one. Since I have got a whole pile of 24 inch square pieces of 1/2 inch thick plywood, I figured that was a good place to start.

Ramp, Building an Accessibility
Being able to get in and out of your house is probably the first and most important thing to address when trying to make your home more accessible. It is a practical matter as well as a personal one, because once you can get in and out of your house more easily you do not feel as trapped and dependent on others.

Chair, Steam Bent Rustic
I have been making rustic chairs for about five years, and the techniques I use work for me. However, this is a craft that calls for individual expression, not only in design but also in techniques and methods.

Desk, Raised Table Top Computer - a relief for a sore back
The Raising Desk goes up and down at the touch of a switch. You can use you computer seated, on a stool, or standing. You can move back and forth between these positions with ease whenever you feel the urge. It is most popular with people with lower back problems who simply can not sit comfortably in a chair for long periods. Others simply like the brake in routine the movement gives or the ease it gives in working with a second person, both standing at the terminal.

You can build five armchairs from one 4x8 ft sheet of 1 inch thick plywood. It hardly seems possible until you check the no-waste cutting diagram.

Chair, Kneeling (PDF)
The concept is not very new. Actually, it has been around for some 25 years. Instead of your mother having to remind you, the chair itself stops you from slouching.
