Introduction to wood turning The earliest objects of woodturning were found in tombs of the pharaohs in Egypt. Early hieroglyphics depict a primitive bow-driven hand drill. Although not a lathe, it is the first indication of the use of a spinning tool. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, cast iron and forged-steel machinery, faceplate turning on a lathe became a reality. In this episode, David introduces the viewers to one of his specialties: woodturning. He explores his Oliver lathe (the most basic of the three lathes he owns), the various turning tools, bowl gouges, scrapers and most importantly, basic wood turning safety. During this episode, David makes a turned bowl crafted from a solid piece of Claro Walnut utilizing the faceplate turning technique.

Jig, Router Fluting for Turned Spindles Several years ago I built a jig for my router so that I could cut flutes in spindles that were turned on the lathe. I did this because I needed to make a fluted split turning for an antique clock. This worked great. The jig is simply a box with rabbets cut in the top edge to accept my router’s base.

Jig, Sharpening - Lathe Gouge tool By Joe in a Cleveland Suburb - A couple of weeks ago I asked about making your own sharpening jig. You all pointed me to several resources. I put all that together and came up with this version. All I did was take scrap pieces of walnut, a couple cherry plywood shorts, and some scrap poplar, glued and screwed it all together and here it is! (Not dimensions, and little instruction, but there are good pictures. Enough info to help you make your own.)
