Bench, Shaker
Simple but functional. That was the Shaker way. And this bench is a good example of Shaker design in practice. You can build this bench out of just about any wood. The photo shows it in pine, all cut from one flat 1 x 12 board.The Shaker Bench is 11-1/4 inches wide by 32 inches long x 16-1/2 inches high. We built our bench from one 8 foot long, 1 x 12 pine board. The only other materials needed are 10 wood screws, 10 wood plugs, and your choice of a finish.

Cabinet, Shaker Cupboard
The Shakers viewed veneers as deceitful, and declared that whatever is fashioned, let it be plain and simple. They used solid maple extensively and particularly admired bird is-eye maple. These resourceful folks also developed the first tongue-and-groove and splining machines to facilitate joining solid woods. The design shown at left follows the Shaker philosophy quite closely.

Cherry classic with splined miter joints. Talk about luck! When we were researching the article on furnituremaker Thomas Moser for the August 1998 issue,we mentioned to him that we are always looking for great project designs. To our surprise, an hour or so later, he handed us shop drawings for this and several other beautifully designed Shaker pieces. Measures 12x17 inches.
