Materials:

  • 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws
  • 1-1/4″ brad nails
  • Edge banding, optional (<– affiliate link!)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (100, 150, 220 grits)
  • Finishing supplies (primer & paint, or stain, sealer)
  • Paste Wax

Lumber:

  • 2 – 1×2 at 6′
  • 1 – 2×2 at 6′
  • 1 sheet of 3/4″ plywood

Cut List:

  • 4 – 2×2 at 12-1/4″ – Legs
  • 2 – 1×2 at 11″ – End Stretchers
  • 2 – 1×2 at 16″ – Side Stretchers
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 12″ x 17″ – Bottom
  • 2 – 1×2 at 15″ – Bottom Trim
  • 2 – 1×2 at 17″ – Bottom Trim
  • 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 12-1/4″ x 19″ – Sides
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 12-1/4″ x 12-1/2″ – Back
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 12-1/2″ x 18-1/4″ – Shelf
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 14″ x 19″ – Top
  • 1 – 3/4″ plywood at 10-7/8″ x 16-3/4″ – Drawer Bottom
  • 2 – 3/4″ plywood at 10-1/2″ x 16-3/4″ – Drawer Sides

Step One

Edge banding will be applied to the exposed edges of the plywood prior to assembly.

Cut the pieces for the legs. There will be a taper cut on two adjoining sides of the legs, and there will be two right legs and two left legs. Take a look at this tutorial on using a tapering jig.

Cut the pieces for the end stretchers. With the pocket hole jig set for 3/4″ material, drill pocket holes in each end of the stretcher pieces. Secure to the legs using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket holes screws.

Step Two

Cut the pieces for the side stretchers and drill pocket holes in each end. Secure to the legs using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Three

Cut the pieces for the bottom and bottom trim. Drill pocket holes in all four edges of the panel as well as each end of the side trim pieces. Assemble the top as shown using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws. Use a router and a decorative bit to cut an edge on the outside of the trim all the way around, if desired. The bottom will overhang the leg frame by 1/2″ on all sides. Secure in place using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Four

Cut the pieces for the sides and drill pocket holes along the lower edge of each piece. Position the pieces so they are 1/2″ from the side, front, and back edges of the bottom. Secure in place using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws.

Step Five

Cut the piece for the back. Secure to the sides and bottom using glue. Further secure the sides with 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Six

Cut the piece for the shelf, and drill pocket holes in the side and back edges. Secure to the sides and back using glue and 1-1/4″ pocket hole screws, locating the shelf 7/8″ down from the top edge of the sides.

Step Seven

Cut the piece for the top. Secure to the sides and back using glue and 1-1/4″ brad nails.

Step Eight

Cut the pieces for the drawer boxes. Drill pocket holes in all four edges of the bottom as well as each end of the sides. Assemble the drawer box as shown using glue and 1-1/4” pocket hole screws.

Cut the piece for the slide-out shelf, and insert into the opening trimming and sanding as necessary. A bead and a screw would make a great knob for the shelf!
